READING SPECIALIST
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Building Principal
I. RESPONSIBILITIES
To provide leadership and direction in the area of literacy at the school level. To work with teachers, administrators, students and other community members to implement, coordinate, and evaluate a comprehensive reading program. The school-wide literacy program includes developmental, remedial, content area, enrichment reading and writing that integrates the communication arts across the curriculum
II. QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree with valid Missouri Teaching Certificate
- Reading specialist certification issued by Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education
- One or two years experience teaching communication arts preferred
- LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling)training preferred
III. FUNCTIONS
- Act as an instructional leader in guiding, directing and modeling, and coaching reading instruction using district instructional model (SIOP) across the K-5 curriculum, including the Title I program
- Identify, assess and monitor reading students
- Maintain appropriate records and files on each student according to federal, state and district guidelines
- Work effectively with students and demonstrate a proven ability to accommodate for the needs of diverse learners
- Work collaboratively with administration to develop, implement and coordinate a comprehensive K-5 Reading/Writing/Communication Arts program
- Exhibit a strong working knowledge of best practices in reading and writing instruction
- Provide a wide variety of staff development offerings and act as a resource in Reading/Writing/Communication Arts for teachers, parents, administrators and community members
- Exhibit effectiveness in the area of planning as aligned with student achievement data
- Support authentic ongoing reading and writing assessment
- Disseminate materials and information on current research related to reading/writing/communication arts
- Demonstrate evidence of participation in the development, implementation and evaluation of the school improvement plan
- Disseminate materials and information on current research related to reading/writing/communication arts
- Be professionally active in educational associations related to reading/writing/communication arts, including regular participation in conferences, workshops and other staff development opportunities
- Perform any and all other duties as assigned
VI. PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT
- Ten (10) months annually
